Every child experiences emotions from the moment they are born. Emotions are a natural part of being human and play an essential role in helping us understand ourselves, communicate with others and respond to the world around us.

Children experience a wide range of feelings every day, yet many do not have the words to describe what they are experiencing. Instead, they may express emotions through crying, shouting, withdrawing, refusing to cooperate or displaying other challenging behaviours. By helping children develop a rich emotional vocabulary, adults provide them with the tools to recognise their feelings, communicate their needs and begin managing their emotions in healthy and constructive ways.

Every child experiences moments when their emotions feel overwhelming. Whether they become upset because they cannot have something they want, frustrated when a game does not go as planned or anxious about trying something new, these emotional moments are a normal part of childhood. What matters is not whether children experience strong emotions, but how they learn to understand and manage them over time.

Supporting children’s emotional wellbeing begins with recognising that adults have emotional needs too. Children benefit most from adults who understand their own emotions, recognise when they need support and model healthy ways of managing stress. Looking after your own wellbeing is therefore not selfish. It is an important part of creating a positive family environment where everyone can thrive.
